Year 55.001 — The 3:10 to Yuma

It’s a new year and I have 3 new year’s resolutions for 2024 with the end goal of having a year full of blessings and ending in great success.

1. Get back to making a green juice shake. I didn’t get all the normal ingredients on day one, but I’m gonna have a mixed berry and apple juice with kale and spinach for dinner so we will see how that goes. Bottom line though, I was happier and healthier when I was juicing everyday so need to get back to that in 2024.

2. Hitting 10K steps. Got another Fitbit and today was the first day since the end of November I tracked my steps. Hit the 10K taking a tour around the half dozen hotels off Interstate 8 and vising the local outdoor mall/shopping area, Yuma Palms. Nice place although very much typical of newer commercial spaces round the Southwest… chains and chains with a few local places mixed in. Like with a daily juice, walking everyday make life better.

3. Getting 7 hours a sleep on a fairly set schedule. I really fall off this when I go across the Pacific as it takes a week or two to fully readjust. Plus I just sleep better in hotels and I use the Fitbit to track my sleep. Tracking sleep, steps and dietary intake are very motivating for a data guy like me. I enjoy seeing the daily accomplishments, which all add to a happier life.

I spent most of the day in Yuma, Arizona. The principal city of SW Arizona and with 2020 estimated population of the Yuma MSA of about 200,000, Yuma was a nice place to visit. According to Guinness World Records, Yuma is the “Sunniest City on Earth,” promising “sunshine and warm weather at least 91% of the year.” Around 85,000 out-of-state visitors make Yuma their winter residence.

Yuma Palms Shopping Center

Why Yuma? Well, it was halfway from where I was to where I am going, which is the theme of a lot of places I visit. The mall and shopping areas were filled with an interesting mix of older, white “snowbirds” and younger mostly Latina families. I find that kind of demographic mix fascinating. Even got to return a few greetings in Spanish while getting my 10K steps in.

I really am not sure what 2024 has in hold for me, it’s a big wide-open canvas to paint in day by day. Day 1 though a good start.
